Ask anyone who has visited Tuscany, and they will tell you all about the many breathtaking villages that can be found there. From beautiful views to gorgeous houses, there is a feast for the senses around every corner. That is why I wanted to share with you 5 breathtaking Tuscan villages that you must see the next time you’re in Tuscany.
Montalcino
With a population of less than 6,000 people, Montalcino is a small but beautiful walled village located west of Pienza. Sitting upon a hill, the town grew out of a church that was built my monks in the 9th century. These days the town is known for its stunning views, old-world charm and the procution of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy’s best-known wines.
Bagno Vignoni
Located in the Val d’Orcia Natural Park, Bagno Vignoni is a popular destination for anyone visiting Tuscany. Where most towns would feature a town square, Bagno Vignoni offers a natural hot spring. This ancient town was an important stop for numerous pilgrims traveling to Rome back in the day and while visiting here you can imagine what it was like to be one of them, while relaxing in a spring of naturally hot water.
Pienza
Rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, Pienza was created to be an ideal Renaissance town. Carefully designed by architects and humanist, it was designed to exemplify the ideals of the Italian Renaissance. The beautiful buildings and harmonious shape of the town make it the perfect destination for history buffs and design buffs alike.
Cortona
Film buffs will remember Cortona as a featured location in the film Under the Tuscan Sun. Located in the province of Arezzo, this charming town is surrounded by stone walls that date back to Etruscan and Roman times. Full of small shops, museums and the historic Piazza della Repubblica, Cortona offers both history and culture.
Montelpulciano
This walled town is full of Renaissance buildings and sits atop a 605-metre limestone ridge. Known for its food and drink, visitors will enjoy a walkable experience, as Montelpulciano is car-free. The Piazza Grande is the heart of the town, and is the frequent location of events such as the barrel-racing “Bravio della Botti” contest held every August.
